PET imaging of pulmonary perfusion and ventilation using 13N-Nitrogen
Regional ventilation and perfusion are key determinants of oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide elimination in the lungs. But, lung diseases lead to deviations from the excellent matching between perfusion and ventilation in healthy lungs. Under the leadership of Dr. Venegas, we developed and refined methods for the 13NN-bolus injection method that allows for highly accurate assessments of perfusion and ventilation using the kinetics of the tracer.
Self-organized bronchoconstriction, tipping points, and ventilation defects in asthma
In contrast to an isolated airway, bronchoconstriction in an airway tree involves feedback, a tipping point, and the emergence of self-organized clustering causing ventilation defects (VDefs).
